The canvas decoy has a long tradition in waterfowl hunting along the Mid-Atlantic Coast. These unique decoys are now an integral part of decoy folk art – often created to compete in the numerous decoy carving competitions around the United States. In past competition events, the canvas-covered decoy competed with the modern and diverse traditional gunner or “shooting stool” decoy. However, more recently, and especially since The International Wildfowl Carving Association published a set of guidelines for the canvas decoy, several of its affiliated shows have a separate division in which all of these distinctive decoys may compete as a separate category. This competition event now speaks for itself and is a perfect “traditional” classification for any show.

A canvas decoy is easy to make by almost anyone, and is always in demand by the decorating homeowner or collector of traditional decoys. In this presentation and live demonstrations, I will show the reader how easy it is to make a nice canvas Canada Goose.
